Chosen Family Night

  • Wellington Museum 3 Jervois Quay Wellington, Wellington, 6011 New Zealand (map)
The words "Chosen Family Night" on pictures of flags flying from a drawing of the Wellington Museum

Chosen Family are the people who understand you, lift you up, celebrate you, help you, and love you, without the need for biological bonds. This event is an invitation to come together, find joy, and celebrate the family you've made with people you have found.

Nau mai, haere mai, piki mai, kake mai with your chosen whānau.

Te Waka Huia Wellington Museum is proud to present Chosen Family Night, a vibrant evening filled with queer history, art, and community, in collaboration with Wellington Pride Festival.

Not your typical night at the museum, the festivities include:

❤️ Rainbow History Tours
🧡 Sirens and Sailors – performance drag art
💛 Smut Captain – Dirty filthy poetry readings
💚 Ave Marie short film screenings
💙 Once Upon A Time: A Very Queer Book Club
💜 Nga Hau Hot Box pop-up disco
💗 Aunty Chrissy’s Library
🤍 Special Rainbow knitting project with Knitorious Lulu, Arlo & The Stitch-Up Crew

Stay tuned for the full schedule.

This event welcomes all members of the rainbow community and allies. While Chosen Family Night is an all-ages event, a cash bar will be available to serve alcohol to manuhiri 18+ with valid photo ID.
